They take perfectly good beer styles and bring them down a notch in lightness (flavor and body)... that is until the Brew Woo beer fest last month where I tasted their new Rye IPA. Rye IPAs are a trickly lot as well, getting the balance right between the rye bitterness and hop bitterness has left my tastebuds numb in some cases. This was originally from their 100 Barrel series (short batch experimental beers) and is now a year round offering. And since it showed up on my order sheet (and now my shelves) I'm happy to enjoy a good Harpoon beer. It pours a medium copper, with 1" head that lingered as I fired up the laptop. Initial grapefruit nose, light rye bitterness, moving into smooth hop bitterness (Apollo?), with a lingering finish. less

Thanks for the review. I must try it. Harpoon IPA has a special place in my heart...it was my first "craft" beer. I was a loyal Yuengling Lager fan until I had a pint of Harpoon IPA at Seasons Pub on Martha Vineyard, summer of'98.

Founded 15 years ago as a brewpub, the establishment is neither one of the oldest nor one of the newest Milwaukee-area craft brewers, but it shares the growth curve of many such breweries. Owner Jim McCabe now has a packaging brewery on 2nd St. with a new canning line, as well as kegging and bottling lines, and serves as a production partner for many successful contract brews. less

The pour was a hazy medium golden yellow with an average sized (1-2 finger) white creamy head that was mostly diminishing down to a light film and a very small collar and had just a bit of spotty lacing.
The aroma was of a light pale hay malt, floral hops and a mild earthy yeast with notes of oats, citrus (lemon and orange) and a slight floral presence.
The taste was lightly bitter throughout with the beginning having mild hints of citrus and a light hoppiness with a slightly sour floral finish. The flavor was short lived with a slight bitter taste that faded fast.
Mouthfeel was light in body with a watery and very lightly oily texture and possessed a fizzy carbonation.
Overall a fantastic summer brew that was light, tasty and quite satisfying. It is great to taste ... less
